Royal Ascot Day 5 Tips and Preview by Dave Stevos

Day 4 wasn’t a disaster for us with a couple of places at tasty odds. Bangkok ran a huge race for us, placing at 10/1 and advised at 16s. Model Guest also ran a stormer, staying on from the rear for 5th, advised at 50/1. JM Jackson never landed a blow, while Rumble Inthejungle must have needed the run badly. Byron Flyer and Happen ran respectably, but not well enough to reward e/w support. It is the final day of the meeting on Saturday, check out Dave Stevos’ Royal Ascot Day 5 free tips below…

Royal Ascot Day 5

Royal Ascot Tips: 2.30 Chesham Stakes (Listed)

The opening race on the final day at Royal Ascot is the Listed Chesham Stakes. Seventeen 2yos will go to post and Lope Y Fernandez is a warm order for O’Brien and Moore. The son of Lope De Vega hacked up on his debut at the Curragh just two weeks ago. The horses in behind that have run since didn’t enhance the form but visually, he was undeniably impressive.

One that could go well for Ballydoyle at a bigger price is Harpocrates. This son of Invincible Spirit will be ridden by Donnacha and he will surely benefit for the step up in trip. Both his starts so far have come over 6f and he has finished 2nd and 3rd behind Siskin. Harpocrates was well beaten on both occasions, but the form of his 3rd last time at the Curragh has worked out well. He had Southern Hills 4L behind and he won the Windsor Castle earlier this week.

Given his pedigree, 7f should be a lot more suitable for the O’Brien charge. He shouldn’t have any issues if there is juice in the ground either. His Galileo dam won over 10f and she is closely related to Derby winner Camelot. O’Brien couldn’t be in much better form and Donnacha will be keen to get a winner on the board. From a good draw in stall 14, Harpocrates is the each way pick at odds of 16/1.

Royal Ascot Day 5 Tips: 3.05 – Jersey Stakes (Group 3)

A field of 18 will line up at the start for the Group 3 Jersey Stakes. Space Blues is the market leader for Appleby and Doyle. The son of Dubawi looks a progressive sort having followed his York handicap win with a Listed success at Epsom.

However, he only had a neck to spare from Urban Icon and at the prices the Hannon horse represents value. He is a 10/1 shot while Space Blues is a best price of just 11/4. Urban Icon ran a big race in the 2000 Guineas behind Magna Grecia and was ahead of Momkin.

The more it dries out the better it will suit this son of Cityscape and his rating of 108 doesn’t leave him with a whole lot to find with the principals. The stiffer test at Ascot could help him to reverse the form with Space Blues from Epsom. At odds of 10/1 an each way interest in Urban Icon is advised.

Royal Ascot Day 5 Tips: 3.40 – Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)

Masar is the star attraction in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes. The 2018 Epsom Derby winner makes a belated return and on form and ratings he should win. The son of New Approach is a very talented animal but the worry is that he may need this return. At his best, he would beat this lot easily but you would have to suspect that connections won’t want him to have a hard race after so long off.

Defoe won the Coronation Cup impressively at Espom last time but he is far from guaranteed to back that up. Lah Ti Dar’s bubble was burst at Epsom, while Southern France surely wants further than 12f. Using a process of elimination, Salouen looks to represent serious each way value at odds of 12/1.

Sylvester Kirk’s stable star will have the assistance of Oisin Murphy in the saddle. He has form in the book that measures up to what most of the others have achieved. His narrow defeat to Cracksman was one such run, as was his excellent 3rd to Waldgeist. It is hard to believe has yet to win a Group race and this course and distance winner could put that right today. At odds of 12/1 Salouen is the each way NAP of the day.

Ascot Racing Tip: 4.20 – Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1)

Blue Point bids to complete a Royal Ascot double in the Diamond Jubilee on Saturday. He already won the King’s Stand over 5f on Tuesday and he must have come out of the race very well. Whether he will be in the same sparkling form though remains to be seen and he also has an extra furlong to contend with.

Invincible Army is the unknown quantity and he takes on Blue Point for the first time. James Tate’s son of Invincible Spirit hosed up in a Group 2 at York last time and looks the real deal. He is also a course and distance winner, though he didn’t perform in the Commonwealth Cup last season. Invincible Army is 5/1, whereas Blue Point is only 9/4 and the Tate horse is preferred of the two at the prices.

However, the one that looks overpriced here is Sands Of Mali. New Zealand jockey James McDonald rides and he is a quality pilot. Sands Of Mali has already got two wins against Invincible Army. He won the Champions Sprint here back in October and he is better than his run at Hamilton last time. Good to soft or good ground will suit perfectly and at odds of 14/1 he is the each way selection.

Royal Ascot Day 5 Tips: 5.00 Wokingham Stakes (Class 2)

The penultimate race on the final day of Royal Ascot is the Wokingham Handicap. A maximum field of 28 will go to post and it looks a very tricky puzzle to solve. Stakes are definitely best kept small for this race and with extra places available, stick to each way wagers. At a huge price, Baron Bolt could go well for Paul Cole and PJ McDonald.

This son of Khelyf dead heated in the Ayr Gold Cup back in September off 101. That effort came on heavy, but five of his seven wins have come on ground with good in the description. The booking of McDonald is a huge plus as he has form figures of 1112 from four rides on Baron Bolt. He is 7 from 39 overall for Cole, with a further 17 top 4 finishes.

Cole’s charge has landed a nice draw in stall 26 and should be spot on fitness wise from his two runs so far this season in Listed company. He returns to handicaps off a mark of 105, just 4lb higher than he was at Ayr. If he can rediscover his spark he is capable of running big off his current rating and at odds of 28/1 he is the each way pick.

Royal Ascot Day 5 Tips: 5.35 – Queen Alexandra Stakes (Class 2)

The last race on the card is one for the plodders. This 2m 5f conditions race has attracted a field of 13 and you would be forgiven for thinking it was a Cheltenham card. Dual purpose performer Max Dynamite heads the market for Mullins and Moore at around 10/3. With a rating on the flat of 110 he is well treated by the conditions of the race, carrying just 9st 2lbs.

If it was a handicap he would be giving plenty of weight to his rivals but instead, he is getting weight from some of them. However, at a massive price it could be worth taking a chance on the 2016 runner up Cayirli. This 6yo is only rated 91 and that is well below the level of some of his rivals. However, he is a better horse than that on his day and he is guaranteed to get the trip.

Seamus Durack’s son of Medicean has only won three times during his 23 race career. Both flat UK wins came over 2 miles on the all weather at Kempton, the last in February 2019. He has plenty of form on turf though and a little bit of juice in the ground will really suit. Cayirli is a speculative each way selection at odds of 40/1.
