Man City v Liverpool: Odds and Predictions

Premier League football returns this Saturday, and if you are a football fan, you’re in for a very exciting weekend!

History has repeated itself once again, with Manchester City frontrunning the premier league table and Liverpool following closely behind. The two teams will go head-to-head this Saturday.

What are the factors?

Man City have always been considered serious competition; they won the treble last year and have consecutively been at the top of the table since 2017-18, except in 2019-20 when they came second, but Liverpool have proved themselves as serious contenders this year despite coming 5th in the table last year.

This year’s game league stats

Man City

The Manchester team won nine out of their twelve matches played and was on a winning streak, beating Brighton, Manchester United, and Bournemouth. Their streak only ended in a nail-biting game against Chelsea, in which City drew 4-4. This upped the defending championship team by one point to the top of the table.

Liverpool

Before that game, Liverpool was drawn for points with Man City and Arsenal. The Reds have had their own winning streak this season, losing only once  in twelve games, to Tottenham 2-1. Since then, they have won three games, beating Everton 2-0, Nottingham Forest 3-0 and Brentford 3-0 and drawn two matches against Brighton and Luton. The Reds have shown they are back to their regular form, and last season was nothing but a blimp.

Injuries

Injuries are piling up in terrible timing for Man City. Top shooter Erling Haaland is a vital part of City’s offence, scoring 42% of Man City’s Premier League goals this season (69 goals in just 71 games). Unfortunately, Haaland joined the long list of casualties for the team, after he suffered a foot injury while playing for Norway last week. However, fortunately for City, Norway boss Stale Solbakken has reassured fans, stating it was a “small knock” and Haaland will make a full recovery, despite not playing in the game against Scotland, “It’s the movement in his foot that is the problem, but it’s not a serious injury,” said Solbakken. Manager Pep Guardiola and City have yet to confirm if Haaland will partake in Saturday’s game.

Goalkeeper Ederson Santana de Moraes is another player injured from Man City, after he also suffered a foot injury in their last match against Chelsea, forcing him to withdraw from the Brazil squad.

Nathan Ake, Matheus Nunes and Sergio Gomez are among those injured but will hopefully return for the title clash against Liverpool. In contrast, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic and Kevin De Bruyne all look set to miss out.

For Liverpool, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate missed the game against Brentford due to injury, and they await further analysis to see how long they will be out for. Curtis Jones could potentially return from injury, while Ryan Gravenberch is expected to return. Stefan Bajcetic, Andrew Robertson and Thiago remain longer-term absentees. Alexis Mac Allister is available after suspension.

Previous Matches

Away v Home

This Saturday’s game is due to take place at Man City’s Etihad Stadium, which gives City a good chance of securing the win (it’s called home-court advantage for a reason); they have also won all of their matches played at Etihad Stadium this season, whereas Liverpool has only one 2 out of six games played away but should still score a goal in the upcoming match.
