Earnshaw was positioned more prominently yesterday and ran a lovely race  for us at 16/1 at Meydan. The winner was too good, but back in blinkers next time Earnshaw could go even closer. Saturday is Clarence House Chase day at Ascot and there is a tiny field for the feature. Dave Stevos’ has studied the card and you can check out his Ascot Saturday tips for all four live ITV4 races below…

Ascot Saturday Tips

Ascot Saturday Tips: 1.50 OLBG Mares’ Hurdle (Grade 2)

Magic Of Light makes the trip over from Ireland for this 23.5f Grade 2 Mares’ Hurdle. She only faces five other rivals, among them Jester Jet, If You Say Run and Culture De Sivola. Jessica Harrington’s charge hosed up in a Listed heat at Newbury last time (23.5f sft). She also ran a massive race in the Troytown Chase off 136 when a blunder cost her all chance of winning.

She gets 4lb from Jester Jet, even though she is rated 5lb higher than that mare. Magic Of Light is the highest rated in the race off 146, so if this was a handicap she would be conceding weight to all of them. If she can repeat the form of her Newbury run, she could be hard to beat. At odds of 7/2 Magic Of Light is our NAP of the day.

Ascot Saturday Tips: 2.25 Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

Ten horses will go to post for this 19.5f handicap hurdle and it looks an open contest. Irish trainer Charles Byrnes is as shrewd as they come and his son of Getaway, Thosedaysaregone, is the 11/4 favourite. He is obviously held in some regard given he ran in a Grade 2 bumper at Aintree last season. A 9lb rise for his impressive Wetherby win last time looks fair and he should run well.

At a nice each way price, New Quay looks an interesting contender for Dan Skelton. He reappeared with a commanding 10L win here on handicap debut back in November. The drop back in trip didn’t suit last time at Newbury and the run also may have come too soon. This son of Mahler is totally unexposed and has been freshened up. Off a mark of 131 New Quay could give each way backers a good run for their money at odds of 10/1.

Ascot Saturday Tips: 3.00 Bet365 Handicap Chase (Class 2)

Thirteen horses line up for this 21f handicap chase and it looks a tricky puzzle to solve. The one that could go well at a big price is Flying Angel for Nigel Twiston-Davies and Tom Bellamy. This son of Arcadio has flopped on his last two outings, but those runs came over 26f and 24f. He simply doesn’t stay that far and the return to 21f and Ascot give cause for optimism.

His last run over this course and distance back in November was his best for some time. He finished 2nd behind Mr Medic (beaten 3L) and he is 6lb better off with that rival here. He ran well to be 4th here behind Top Notch in a Grade 2 back in 2017, so he clearly thrives at Ascot. Hopefully the drop back in trip sparks him back to life and he is worth chancing each way at odds of 20/1, with some bookies paying 4 places for each way bets.

Ascot Saturday Tips: 3.35 Clarence House Chase (Grade 1)

The presence of Altior has scared off the majority of potential runners in this race. Only three will go to post, a very disappointing turnout. Altior is a best price of just 1/8 and he is impossible to oppose. He has looked as good as ever this season and his last win at Kempton was thrilling to watch.

Fox Norton looks the most likely horse to chase him home, but he may well need the run. This will be his first run for over a year and fitness has to be taken on trust. Diego Du Charmil could only get to within 19L of Altior at Kempton and he has little chance of turning the form around. However, he has race fitness on his side and he could take second spot. No bet recommended for this race, just sit back and enjoy the aeroplane Altior strut his stuff.
