Rapid Can Rattle Home In Rockingham
The Irish Derby Festival takes place this weekend and the festivities start on Thursday at the Curragh. The Rockingham Handicap is the feature on the opening night. It looks a typically competitive heat and a tricky puzzle to decipher. Dave Stevos thinks one looks overpriced at decent odds, check out his Curragh Thursday tip below…
Curragh Thursday Tip: 7.45 Rockingham Premier Handicap
Rain at the weekend softened the ground on the straight course at the Curragh to yielding, soft in places. However, it was a warm, windy day on Wednesday and it will surely be good ground on Thursday. Another dry, hot day is on the cards and conditions should be ideal for Rapid Reaction. I fancied this filly to go well in the Ballyogan Stakes after her fine run behind Soffia at Naas.
She didn’t stay 6f on the ground that day, but next time up she ran a cracker behind El Astronaute at Cork. She was only 2.5L behind the Quinn horse in receipt of 8lb in that Listed heat and he is 11/2 here. Rapid Reaction gets 21lb this time with her jockey able to utilise his 5lb claim back in handicap company. She is also 13lb better off with Ardhoomey (for 1.25L) and 11lb better off with Smash Williams (for 1.75L).
That suggests that Rapid Reaction is well overpriced on that form considering those two horses are 10/1 and 12/1. She is by Shamardal, so nice ground should suit, and her half sister was a Listed winner at this track. She is a Naas winner so this stiff 5f should suit her better than Cork. Rapid Reaction will start from stall 16, close to El Astronaute, so she should get a good pace to aim at and a tow into the race. At odds of 18/1, she looks well worth an each way interest in a wide open race.
