Epsom Derby Day Preview For ITV Races

After a slow start for us on Epsom on Friday we finished with a flourish, just like our main Oaks fancy Fleeting. She flew home once she found daylight and rates as a very unlucky loser. At least we got our each way money, advised at 40/1. Manuela De Vega drifted to 16/1 and still ran a cracker in 4th. Mr Scaramanga also placed for us at 25s so overall, it was a profitable day. Hopefully we can bash the bookies again with a winner or two on Derby Day. You can read his in-depth preview of the Epsom Derby here. Epsom Saturday Racing Tips

Epsom Saturday Preview: 2.00 – Investec Handicap (Class 2)

It is an underwhelming start to proceedings on Derby Day at Epsom with just 9 going to post for this 10f 3yo handicap. It is 4/1 the field and as the betting suggests, it is wide open. Politicise is just about favourite and the son of Camelot should relish the step up in trip. He carries a feather weight and he looks sure to run a big race for the Haggas team. Mark Johnston runs three and the outsider of the trio, Victory Command, could be the best of them.

His form nosedived after his good 4th, beaten 4L, behind Mohawk in the Group 2 Royal Lodge (8f gd/fm). A former listed winner, on good to firm, he was well below par in Meydan and his first two runs back in the UK were poor. However, he showed clear signs of returning to form last time at Haydock (8f gd/fm) and that will have boosted his confidence. His mark has dropped from 103 to 93 and Fanning is back on board (2/3 on him). The son of War Command will relish the ground, should stay the trip and at 11/1 he is the each way pick.

Epsom Saturday Tips: 2.35 – Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Group 3)

After the Oaks on Friday, this Group 3 gives the girls another opportunity to strut their stuff. Run over an extended mile, a total of 8 fillies will go to post. The highest rated horse in the race is Veracious (110) and she is the 7/4 favourite. Michael Stoute has been firing in the winners relentlessly and this filly has form at a much higher level than this. Veracious does carry a 3lb penalty though and on ratings, Nyaleti should beat her with a 3lb pull.

She is rated 109 and in a handicap would only be getting a pound from Veracious. She gets 3lb, though the worry for her supporters is that her very best form has come on easy ground. At a monster price, the ex Michael Halford trained filly Vivianite is interesting. She has Listed placed form in the book, and the run that makes her of interest was her 4th behind Sarocchi at Naas. She was 3/4L behind the then 107 rated Could It Be Love and dead heated with Making Light (rated 112), form that would put her right in the mix. Archie Watson is flying and at 33/1 this daughter of Teofilo is the each way selection.

Epsom Saturday Racing Tips: 3.10 – Diomed Stakes (Group 3)

Zaaki is a warm favourite for the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at 13/8 and this looks a cracking contest. He is rated 112, the same as Bye Bye Hong Kong who can be backed at 5/2. However, the Andrew Balding trained horse gets 12lb from his market rival as he is only a 3yo. That is a big chunk of weight, but 3yos get it for a reason as they are not as physically developed as older horses. The stats are against Bye Bye Hong Kong too. No 3yo has won this since Bluegrass Prince all the way back in 1994.

At a big price, Chief Ironside could give each way backers a good run for their money. William Jarvis trains this son of Lawman and both his runs this year were poor. However, they came on soft ground and this fella wants it like the road. Both his wins last season came at 10f but dropping back to a mile should pose no problems. He was 3rd, beaten 1.75L, at Goodwood behind Regal Reality off level weights last August, form that would put him right in the mix here. At odds of 16/1, Chief Ironside looks a cracking each way bet.

Epsom Racing Tips: 3.45 – Epsom Dash Handicap (Class 2)

The 5f course at Epsom is one of the fastest in the world and this race makes for a lovely appetiser before the main course. Twenty speedsters will go to post and though he is a short enough price, Hathiq looks potentially well handicapped off 88 for Denis Hogan and James McAuley. He beat an in-form Mokhalad easily at Tipperary over 5f on ground probably soft enough for him two starts back.

The regally bred son of Exceed and Excel was even better at the Curragh last time on good to firm, hosing up off 84. He only has a 4lb penalty for that run and is 7lb well in on his Irish rating of 95. In my opinion, he is even better than that and Group company beckons after this. Rory Cleary keeps the ride and he is one of the strongest jockeys around. He is well drawn in stall 18 and if he runs to form, he should win at odds of 9/2.

Just in case lady luck intervenes, having a saver on one at a big price makes sense. Although a high draw is favoured over 5f here, 3 of the last 7 winners started from stalls 1 and 2. Most interestingly of all, they scored at 25s, 16s and 50s. One drawn low that could go well at a price is Mokaatil. He is a speedy horse and he has done all his winning on quick ground. He ran well the last twice considering it was soft and with Andrew Breslin claiming 5lb and ground to suit, a big run could be forthcoming at 22/1.
