Leopardstown Thursday Tip: Foster’s Mare Merits A Bet
It was a mixed day for us at Haydock on Saturday. Dance Legend was a bit keen early and while she ran well, it wasn’t good enough to land our e/w bets. Dave Dexter, advised at 25s, went off at single figure odds but he wasn’t able to land a blow. At least our e/w NAP Suedois ran a big race at 16/1, chasing home an impressive and progressive winner. He is a consistent horse and his turn isn’t far away. It is Ballycorus Stakes day at Leopardstown and Dave Stevos likes one at a big price in the Rated Race at 7.10. Check out his Leopardstown Thursday tip below…
Leopardstown Thursday Tip: 7.10 Rated Race (1m 2F)
The Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes is the racing highlight at Leopardstown on Thursday night. Only seven will go to post in it though and it doesn’t appeal from a betting perspective. It would be great to see good old Gordon Lord Byron win it and he won’t be far away if repeating the form of his last run at the Curragh. He is just 9/2 though and at a much bigger price I think a mare could outrun her odds in the rated race at 7.10.
Merited, a 6yo daughter of Art Connoisseur, is a horse I have been following for some time. Her dam is a half sister to the dam of Surrounding and Rummaging, two 100+ rated performers. She was a massive eyecatcher on her debut at Cork (7f gd) in a maiden in May 2018. She flew home for 3rd, after being hampered, and finished 2L behind Most Gifted (now rated 98) and 1/2L behind Hence (now rated 95). Even more impressively, she was conceding 8lb to the both of them.
Form In The Book
She ran her best race since on soft ground at Tipperary (9f) on just her 2nd handicap start off 78. Merited stayed on very well from a poor draw in stall 15 that day to grab 2nd. The winner was Insignia of Rank, off 78, and he is now rated 101. Including the jockey’s claim, Merited conceded 11lb to the winner. She beat Aussie Valentine, a rock solid benchmark, cosily for 2nd. The 4th home was Band of Outlaws off 93 and he has made a big impact since switching to hurdles.
Sneezy Foster’s mare was below par on her first two runs back this season. However, she showed clear signs of life on her last run here over 8f. She had to challenge very wide from an unpromising position, but she eventually flew home to be beaten only 4L. On the figures, she has it all to do in this race. However, her rating of 69 does not reflect her true ability. She won’t mind a drop of rain, which looks likely, and 10f should suit too. At odds of 33/1, Merited is worth chancing each way for small stakes.
