Newbury Friday: ITV4 Live Races Preview And Tips

Timiyan ran a lifeless race for us in the Troytown last Sunday, but Mr Diablo produced a mighty effort. He travelled and jumped like the best horse in the race but unfortunately found just one too good. He gave us a great run for our money to grab 2nd. What made it even better was a lovely drift out to 50/1. He could be one to keep onside for the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown. The ITV4 cameras will be at Newbury Friday for Day 1 of the Ladbrokes Trophy meeting.  You can read Dave Stevos’ thoughts on all four live races below…

Newbury Friday

1.50 Newbury Friday: Ladbrokes Novice Chase (Grade 2)

A very disappointing field of just four horses will line up for this 2m 4f  Grade 2 Novices’ Chase. It is win only for betting purposes. On the figures La Bague Au Roi will be very hard to beat at odds of 6/4. She has the highest rating in the field with a mark of 150, but due to the mares’ allowance she gets lots of weight from all three of her rivals.

She had both Lostintranslation (1.5L) and Talkischeap (6.5L) well behind over this course last time over a bit further. It is difficult to see those two turning that form around. The ground is going to be softer on Friday but that will not pose any problems for La Bague Au Roi. At odds of 6/4 she is the TXODDS NAP of the day.

2.25 Newbury Friday: Ladbrokes Handicap Chase (Class 2)

Another frustratingly small field for each way players with just seven due to go to post for this 20f chase. King’s Odyssey is a horse that deserves to get his head in front after a string of consistent efforts, but he remains a couple of pounds above his last winning mark. Willoughby Court looks likely to go off as favourite and he is entitled to be thereabouts on his chase form last season.

However, at a nice price Aso could go well for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch. This 8yo son of Goldneyev last saw the track over a year ago but he has gone well fresh in the past. He was a fine 3rd in the Ryanair at Cheltenham back in 2017 and a repeat of that would see him go close here. The handicapper has given him a chance and off a mark of 150 Aso could go well at odds of 10/1.

3.00 Newbury Friday: Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle (Grade 2)

Eight stayers will line up at the start for this 3 mile Grade 2 hurdle. The ground on the hurdle course at Newbury is officially soft so stamina will be at a premium. Some very classy sorts face off in this race and Wholestone is the market leader following his impressive comeback win at Aintree. That win came on good but he acts on soft too, so he won’t mind underhoof conditions at Newbury. He had Unowhatimeanharry over 4L behind in 3rd at Aintree and he can uphold the form.

Sam Spinner was one of the biggest improvers last season but he could well need this comeback run. The dark horse in this race is 16/1 shot Clyne. This 8yo is lightly raced for his age and he has finished out of the first three just 3 times in 17 starts, winning 6 races. He goes really well fresh and he looks well worth a crack at this trip. His career form figures on his seasonal return read 312 and if he stays Clyne could give each way backers a run for their money at odds of 16/1.

3.35 Newbury Friday: Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

A dozen horses will run in this 3 mile handicap hurdle and a case can be made for most of them. At a huge price, Hit The Highway looks an interesting contender for Chris Gordon and Brendan Powell. This 9yo looked like the winner before blundering at the last on his seasonal reappearance last year off 122.

His form dipped after that mishap and he changed yards in February, moving from Giles Smyly to his current home. Shrewd handler Chris Gordon wasn’t long in coaxing him back to form. Hit The Highway ran a cracker over this course and distance on his second run for his new trainer. He again ran well on his final start of last season at Fontwell when beaten a length and he is only 1lb higher here. Hit The Highway has a decent record fresh and at odds of 28/1 he could make a bold bid for each way players.
