Sandown Racing Tips: Scilly Isles Chase Meeting

Dark Red was a shade unlucky not to nick a place for us at Meydan on Thursday. He broke well and had what looked like a decent position on the inner. However, he was denied a clear run at a vital time and just couldn’t recover. The ITV cameras will be in London on Saturday and you can check Dave Stevos’ Sandown Saturday tips for all four live races below…

Sandown Saturday

Sandown Saturday Tips: 1.50 888Sport Contenders Hurdle (Listed)

The presence of Buveur D’Air means only five will line up in the 2 mile Listed hurdle he has won the past two years. However, he suffered his first defeat since 2016 last time at Kempton. Verdana Blue took full advantage of an uncharacteristic blunder three hurdles from home to score by a short head. However, the Champion Hurdle winner looked as good as ever when beating Samcro two starts back, and he is impossible to oppose at 1/7.

The one that could sneak a place here at a big price is Rayvin Black. This grand old 10yo loves it at Sandown and was second in this in 2016 and 2017. His overall form figures on this course and distance read 121262. He should be suited by dropping back in trip to 16f too after two spins over 20f. He will go hard from the front and if Buveur D’Air doesn’t jump cleanly Rayvin Black could be the one to benefit. At odds of 25/1 a small each way interest is advised.

Sandown Saturday Tips: 2.25 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)

Again, only five will line up for this 20f Grade 1 and it is a disappointing turn out. It is tight at the head of the market, but it looks like unbeaten 6yo Vinndication will go off as favourite. He is currently 13/8, with both Lostintranslation and Defi Du Seuil hot on his heels at 2/1 and 11/4 respectively. Of the three it is hard to get away from Vinndication.

His form looks rock solid and in hindsight it was a cracking effort to give Champ 6lb and a beating in his Novice Hurdle win last season. He has jumped well for the most part, bar a couple of hairy moments. If he puts in a clear round he is the one they have to beat and at odds of 13/8 he is our NAP of the day.

Sandown Saturday Tips: 3.00 Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

A maximum field of 18 horses have been declared for this devilishly difficult looking 23.5f handicap hurdle. It really is wide open and the current favourite is Casko D’Airy for Nicholls and Cobden. He hosed up at Ascot last time off just 113 and off a 14lb higher mark he is entitled to go well again off a feather weight. He lacks experience in races of this nature though and it could pay to chance one at a bigger price each way.

At an absolutely massive price, Coole Cody could outrun his odds of 40/1 for Michael Blake. This 8yo has been disappointing since winning easily at Cheltenham two seasons back. He has presumably had issues because he was pulled up on his only start last term. He showed some of the old ability still remained when 4th in a Novice Chase on his return. His mark has dropped to 137, a pound higher than the mark he won off at Cheltenham. Ground will suit, he should stay the trip and at 50/1 a small each way bet is advised.

Sandown Saturday Tips: 3.35 Masters Handicap Chase (Class 2)

The final live race of the day on ITV is the 24f Masters Handicap Chase. Houblon Des Obeaux ran out a ready winner of a Veterans’ race here a few weeks ago and he should go well again. However, the 12yo may have to give best to something with younger legs this time. At a nice each way price Rolling Dylan could go well for Hobbs and Nolan.

This son of Indian River will appreciate the ease in the ground and the drop back to 24f could really suit. He ran a cracker at Cheltenham two starts back over 26f and it looked like he didn’t quite get home. Philip Hobbs’ 8yo is only a pound higher now, so he is not handicapped out of this. He is sure to get a strong pace to aim in this and if Nolan can get his timing right Rolling Dylan could reward each way support at 14/1.
