Saturday York Tips and Preview

Merited was well backed on Thursday and when the race started she was 12/1. However, she could only manage a very frustrating 4th after getting trapped wide turning in. She is a mare to keep a close eye on for her next few starts. Royal Ascot is just around the corner, but there is a nice appetiser at York on Saturday. ITV4 will be showing four races from the Knavesmire live. Check out Dave Stevos’ Saturday York Tips below…

Saturday York Tips

1.50 Queen Mother’s Cup Handicap (Class 3)

A 15 runner 12f handicap for Lady Amateur riders gets the action underway at York on Saturday. This looks a tricky heat and that is a recurring theme throughout the day. One that looks handicapped to go well and that will like the ground is Mutamaded. Ruth Carr trains this 6yo son of Arcano and Emily Bullock will claim 3lb. He comes into the race on a mark of 83 and his last win came off a mark of 91. He shaped okay over this trip three starts back off 89.

That effort came at Ripon on good ground and though he finished last of 6, he was only beaten 3L for the win. The winner won again off 3lb higher next time while the 3rd also won on his next start. Mutamaded ran poorly at Chester on his next outing, but it was better last time when 3L behind the winner over 10f at Ayr. He has won on soft, Ruth Carr’s horses are running really well and at odds of 20/1, Mutamaded is the each way pick.

 2.25 – JCB Handicap (Class 2)

Things don’t get any easier in the second race of the day. A total of 20 will go to post for this 7f handicap and it looks wide open. Although the trip of 7f poses a question mark, one horse that is going to relish conditions is Flying Pursuit. This son of Pastoral Pursuits has been some servant to the Ontoawinner Syndicate. He loves to get his toe in and he looks well handicapped after four poor efforts on unsuitable ground this term.

He will run off 95 on Saturday, a pound above his last winning mark and a pound below his highest winning mark. Rachel Richardson has been on board for 3 of his last 4 wins and she gets on really well with him. He has never won over 7f, but he has never run over the trip on soft. Flying Pursuit has form figures of 512 on soft at York and has won here on good to soft too. He was beaten 3/4L off 100 here over 6f last October. Off 5lb lower, he could outrun his odds of 33/1.

York Saturday Tips: 3.00 – Ebor Grand Cup Stakes (Listed)

This 14f Listed heat looks like Mekong’s to lose. Michael Stoute’s son of Frankel ran a cracker behind Dee Ex Bee over 16f on quick ground last time. He had the Johnston pair Austrian School (a head) and Making Miracles (5L) behind. They both reoppose here and back on an easy surface, Mekong can uphold the form. Making Miracles might get a bit closer on soft, and he could be the one for the forecast. However, at just even money Mekong doesn’t appeal as a bet and this is a race to just watch for clues for bigger races later in the season.

3.35 – Sprint Handicap (Class 2)

The final race in our York Saturday preview is a 22 runner 6f sprint. Horses carrying a lot of weight have a poor record in his but even so, Barbill could go well off a mark of 100. This son of Zebedee loves soft ground and he has some serious form in the book. He won the big Auction race at the Curragh last season (6f gd/yld). He signed off last season with a superb win in a Listed heat in France (5.5f Vsft), form that has worked out seriously well.

Barbill hacked up by 2.5L that day and the 3rd, Tertius (over 3L behind), won a Listed heat by 6L on his next start. Munitions was 4th, 5L behind Barbill, and he won a Group 3 next time. He has only had his ground once this season, last week in France, and he never got a clear run and was given an easy time. Gerald Mosse takes over in the plate, which is a big positive. On the form of his Listed win last season, Barbill could outrun his odds of 25/1.
