What a week that was at the Cheltenham Festival. The highlight had to be Eglantine Du Seuil winning for us at 50/1 in the Mares’ Novice. Paisley Park and Altior were both hugely impressive for different reasons. Al Boum Photo finally delivered for Mullins and Townend in the Gold Cup. Bryony Frost and Rachael Blackmore both landed Grade 1s, while Croco Bay rolled back the years with a thrilling Grand Annual win. The focus switches to the Midlands National on Saturday. Uttoxeter Racing Tip: Midlands Grand National Handicap Chase (Listed)
The Midlands National is going to be a proper slog this year. Run over a marathon trip of 4 miles 2 furlongs, stamina will definitely be the order of the day on testing ground. One horse that looks like he has been crying out for an extreme trip is Prime Venture. This 8yo son of Primary has run really well on his last two starts over 3 miles. He has travelled and finished strongly, but he just lacks a bit of toe over that distance.
The run that makes him of big interest here was his second to Ramses De Telle, who was running off 140, in December at Chepstow. That horse franked the form by finishing runner up in the Welsh National off 4lb higher next time. He was then beaten less than a length off 149 in the Grand National Trial at Haydock and is now rated 154. Prime Venture was beaten by 2.5L by him at Chepstow off 137 and is just 2lb higher now.
He finished a good 3rd, again at Chepstow, on his last outing, 4.5L behind the winner Yaltari. He is now rated 8lb higher and was 3rd in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Chase. Prime Venture has been freshened up and on his last two runs he looks potentially well handicapped. He will love the ground, he looks like he could relish the trip and at odds of 25/1 he is our each way selection.
