The Welsh Grand National is one of the highlights of the festive period (after the King George of course!) and a maximum field of 20 horses have been declared. Last year’s winner Raz De Maree is back for another crack at the ripe old age of 13. Dave Stevos has had a look at the race and you can check out his Welsh Grand National tip and preview below…
Welsh Grand National Tip-Nudge A Nuts Price For Dennis
One horse that stands out like a sore thumb for a number of reasons is Final Nudge. This son of Kayf Tara hasn’t been seen since running poorly at Uttoxeter in May. However, he is a better horse than he showed that day and he has a superb record when fresh. He is making his seasonal comeback here and his career form figures first time out read 24212.
Final Nudge ran a cracker in this race last year off a mark of 145 behind Raz De Maree. He was 15L behind the winner, who he was conceding a fair chunk of weight to. Final Nudge meets that rival on much better terms today, even when Conor Orr’s claim is taken into account.
He races off a mark of 138, 7lb lower than last year, while Raz De Maree is 2lb higher, a 9lb swing in the weights. Consequently, we think the 9yo can turn the form around. Soft ground will suit him too, and he showed last year that the track will pose no problems either.
The booking of Sam Twiston-Davies is an eye-catching one. This will be his first spin on board Final Nudge but he has a fine record overall when riding for David Dennis. He has 10 wins and 36 top 4 finishes from just 98 rides for the yard.
Some bookmakers will be paying an extra place or two each way, so shop around for the best terms. At the time of writing, Final Nudge could be backed at 16/1 for 5 places at 1/5 odds with William Hill. We think those are generous odds and he is a confident each way selection for this year’s Welsh Grand National.
