York Tips And Preview

Day 2 went a lot better for us at York and we managed to find the Dante winner. Telecaster produced a top class performance to lower the colours of Too Darn Hot. Advised e/w NB at 13/2, he returned at 7/1. Open Wide was the only one of our selections not to figure, but he wasn’t disgraced and his turn is near. Rawdaa nearly upset the jolly in the Middleton, but ultimately had to settle for a close 2nd. She was advised e/w at 13/2 and returned at 6/1. Our e/w NAP Firmament drifted to 20/1 but still ran a huge race to be 2nd. Check out Dave Stevos York Day 3 tips and preview of all live IYV4 races below…

York Day 3 Tips

York Day 3 Tips: 1.50 Marygate Fillies’ Stakes (Listed)

19 unexposed 2yo fillies will go to post in search of some coveted black type in this 5f contest. 3 of the last 7 winners have been priced up at 20/1 or bigger and only two favourites have won since 2012. Plenty of bookies are offering an extra place each way, so taking a chance on one at a big price for small stakes makes sense. At monster odds, Macho Touch could surprise with a big run for Karl Burke and Ben Curtis.

This filly is bred for 5f on quick ground and her trainer reported she was nowhere near 100% fit for her debut at Newcastle. Burke says she works really well at home and he has some nice 2yos to judge her against. She is closely related to Hay Chewed, a Listed winner also by Camacho who relished fast ground. Macho Touch has 9.5L to find with Lady Kermit on that Newcastle run, but she could improve on that performance on a more suitable track and with that experience behind her. She is the each way pick at odds of 66/1.

York Day 3 Tips: 2.25 – Oaks Farms Stables Fillies’ Stakes (Listed)

Another Listed contest for fillies, this time an 8f heat for 3yos yet to win a Group race. 12 will go to post and Twist ‘N’ Shake is the favourite at 15/8. She was ultra impressive on soft last time, but was beaten on both starts last season on quick ground. This is a big step up and the jury is very much still out on her. The one that looks too big a price in this field is Modern Millie for 2012 winning trainer Mick Channon.

This daughter of Sixties Icon is rated 95, 5lb lower than the highest rated in this race. The form of her maiden win is decidedly ordinary, but her two runs this season have been much better. She first ran a lovely race in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free at Newbury (7f gd/sft). Modern Millie finished 6th, only a neck behind next time out Listed winner Queen Jo Jo. She again ran well upped to 8f on good to firm for the first time at Ascot last time, beaten just 3L in 3rd behind Muchly. At 28/1, Modern Millie could give each way backers a run for their money.

York Racing Preview: 3.00 – Yorkshire Cup Stakes (Group 2)

The Blue Riband race on the final day of the Dante Meeting at York is the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup. This 14f contest revolves around the odds on favourite Stradivarius. He is out to repeat his flawless campaign last year when he landed a million pound bonus. The son of Sea The Stars is the highest rated with a mark of 120, but he carries a penalty of 3lb. That should bring Ispolini into the reckoning, who has no penalty and is rated 116. He ran well in Dubai last time but he had four runs over there and they could have taken a toll.

For each way players, the one that makes most appeal at a price is Mootasadir. I was at Dundalk when he won there back in September and he is an extremely well put together horse. His last 4 wins have come on the all weather and so far, his turf form is poor. However, two of his runs on grass came on easy ground and his only run on good to firm was too bad to be true.

He is by Dansili and out of a Galileo mare so quick ground should be right up his street. His dam was a 6 time turf winner on good or better, including a Group 1 success. There is no doubt that Stradivarius is going to be a tough nut to crack. However, if he is going to be turned over it could be on his seasonal return over a trip short of his optimum. At odds of 14/1 Mootasadir is the each way alternative to the winner.

York Racing Tips: 3.35– Matchbook Handicap (Class 2)

The final race we will be covering this week at York is a 10.5f handicap. A dozen have been declared and talking horse extraordinaire UAE Prince is the 2/1 fav. He went close in a number of valuable handicaps last year, including here, but came up short. He hasn’t won since 2016, including off marks lower than today’s and the percentage call is to take him on.

An interesting one at a nice each way price is The Emperor Within. Trained by Martin Smith, this son of Holy Roman Emperor ran a lovely race on his seasonal return at Nottingham (8.5f gd/fm). He has yet to win at beyond a mile, but his pedigree offers real hope that 10.5f on quick ground should be within reach. He won’t lack for assistance from the saddle with Gerald Mosse booked and at odds of 14/1 he is the each way pick.
